I strongly support the Northern Angeles Forest Campaign’s vision for better protecting and enhancing our nearby national forest public lands
The northern Angeles Forest is 240,000 acres of chaparral-studded country. This area features impressive views of peaks, magnificent canyons, and complex geology. Located just north of Santa Clarita, Castaic and Agua Dulce, this place is worthy of national monument status. It is a biodiversity hotspot and also a major source of our drinking water in the Santa Clara River Watershed, which a national monument would help protect. The area is also known for its cultural significance with artifacts of Indigenous Peoples whose stories need to be told. Additionally, it is a place of more recent local historical significance that needs to be remembered.
The new national monument will establish these major priorities:
1. Honor Indigenous Peoples who have stewarded this land for millennia and preserve their sacred sites.
2. Protect wildlife and wildlife linkages.
3. Celebrate the rich history and cultural significance of the area.
4. Provide our local mountains a more powerful identity to help attract resources
5. Improve sustainable recreation opportunities, visitor education programs, and new opportunities for everyone to have access to nature.
6. Better protect the Santa Clara Watershed and the drinking water it provides.
7. Prevent mining and resource extraction.
I urge our public officials and leaders to support this great vision for establishing the Northern Angeles Forest National Monument.
