Protect Grand Canyon's waters -- Shut Down Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine!

Petition to Hobbs_web.jpg

For several decades, Tribal leaders and environmental advocates have been fighting a uranium mine that threatens the waters of Grand Canyon and the Havasupai. The mine, originally named Canyon Mine and now renamed as Pinyon Plain Mine is in the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument and the Red Butte Traditional Cultural Property. The mining company is now pulling ore from the mine and hauling it to the White Mesa Mill in Blanding, Utah. We continue to fight. Please work with us and Indigenous leaders to help close Pinyon Plain uranium mine and protect our waters.

This mine threatens to pollute the groundwater that feeds the seeps and springs in Grand Canyon, supporting plants, animals, and people.

For several decades, Tribal leaders and environmental advocates have been fighting a uranium mine that threatens the waters of Grand Canyon and the Havasupai. The mine, originally named Canyon Mine and now renamed as Pinyon Plain Mine, is in the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument and the Red Butte Traditional Cultural Property. Last year, after a jump in uranium prices, the mining company started to pull ore from the mine. This mine threatens to pollute the groundwater that feeds the seeps and springs in Grand Canyon, supporting plants, animals, and people, as several water studies have indicated. Please do everything you can to help protect the waters of Grand Canyon, the national monument, and these waters that are essential to the existence of the Havasupai people. This mine should be closed before it creates irreversible harm. Thank you.
