Militarizing the Wild: Troops Deploy Concertina Wire in Critical Wildlife Corridors

The ongoing Trump administration has deployed over 10.000 troops to date on the Southern border. As human crossings have significantly decreased, the military personnel have now been assigned a new mission: To install vast amounts of concertina wire in some of the most remote and ecologically sensitive areas of the border; these areas represent the last opportunities for wildlife migration, free movement and survival.

Concertina wire has been proven to be an ineffective human deterrent as people have found simple ways to move across it, unfortunately, this is not the case for wildlife.

The already fragmented border landscape now poses another deadly threat to wildlife, the concertina wire now goes up into mountain ranges and inside wildlife refuges, national forests, and other public lands.

Please sign the petition to ask for an immediate cessation to this destructive operation, removal of this deadly trap in all areas, and a reinvestment in policies that protect both human dignity, wildlife, and our shared environment.

Concertina wire has been proven to be an ineffective human deterrent as people have found simple ways to move across it. Unfortunately, however, wildlife cannot do the same and it is a huge deterrent for wildlife movement. The already fragmented border landscape now poses another deadly threat to wildlife, as the concertina wire now goes up into mountain ranges and inside wildlife refuges, national forests, and in other public lands. We call for the immediate cessation of this destructive operation, removal of this deadly trap in all areas, and a reinvestment in policies that protect both human dignity, wildlife, and our shared environment.
