SB1280 Public monies; Mexican wolf; Prohibition (Farnsworth) would prohibit the Arizona Game and Fish Commission from transporting Mexican gray wolf puppies into Arizona and also from spending any money for transporting wolf puppies into the state. This is a direct attack on the current federal efforts to improve the genetic diversity of Mexican gray wolves in the wild, and undermines the science-based administration of the Endangered Species Act.
Mexican gray wolves were nearly eliminated from this Earth and were totally absent from the wild for many years. Following their listing as an endangered species in 1976, the United States and Mexico collaborated to capture all lobos remaining in the wild. Mexican gray wolf numbers have increased, but with just one population and only 319 total wolves in the wild in Arizona and New Mexico, they are hardly recovered.
Prohibiting the Arizona Game and Fish Commission from transporting Mexican wolf puppies into Arizona could further limit the recovery of these highly endangered animals in the state and undermine state and federal partnerships.
