Tell Lawmakers: Ban Toxic "Forever Chemicals" in Common Household Products

PFAS chemicals have been used since the 1940s in thousands of products including nonstick cookware, electronics, plastic and rubber, stain repellents, polishes, and paints and coatings. By design, they do not break down easily, and studies have shown that these “forever chemicals” accumulate in our bodies over time and increase the risk of long-term health problems, including cancer, developmental harm in children, hormone disruption, and other serious health risks. PFAS are present in ~50% of New York’s public water systems, infiltrating our drinking water and putting public health in jeopardy. An estimated 98% of people living in the US have PFAS in their bodies, according to the CDC.

New York lawmakers have only a few days remaining in the 2025 legislative session to “turn off the tap” on toxic PFAS chemicals by passing 2 critical bills to ban PFAS in everyday products. Will you send a message to Senate and Assembly Leadership urging them to support these critical bills? We can't win this fight without your help.

  • S.187-A/A.7738, a Comprehensive PFAS Ban: Phases out PFAS in everyday items like non-stick cookware, dental floss, children’s products, ski wax, cleaning products, fabric treatments, rugs, paint, and household textiles by January 1, 2027.
  • S.2057/A.2054, the Beauty Justice Act: Bans PFAS and a list of other known toxins, such as lead and formaldehyde, from personal care and cosmetic products.

New York has already taken steps in recent years to phase out PFAS in firefighting foam, food packaging, apparel, and carpets, but further action is needed to protect public health. Urge Senate and Assembly Leadership to protect the health of New Yorkers by keeping toxic PFAS chemicals out of our homes, our environment, drinking water, and our bodies!

PFAS “forever chemicals” are linked to cancer, developmental harm in children, hormone disruption, and other serious health risks. PFAS are present in ~50% of New York’s public water systems, infiltrating our drinking water and putting public health in jeopardy. The CDC estimates that 98% of people in the U.S. have PFAS in their bodies. I urge your support of 2 critical bills to ban PFAS in household and personal care products before the end of the 2025 legislative session: - S.187A/A.7738, a Comprehensive PFAS Ban: Phases out PFAS in everyday items like non-stick cookware, dental floss, children’s products, ski wax, cleaning products, fabric treatments, rugs, paint, and household textiles by January 1, 2027. - S.2057/A.2054, the Beauty Justice Act: Bans PFAS and a list of other known toxins, such as lead and formaldehyde, from personal care and cosmetic products. S.187-A/A.7738 would take a more comprehensive look at banning the use of PFAS chemicals, instead of addressing the issue product type by product type. Single product sector bans have been effective, and I am grateful for the work done by New York lawmakers in recent years to phase out PFAS in firefighting foam, food packaging, apparel, and carpets, but now we need to tackle the issue head on and “turn off the tap” on these chemicals earlier in the supply chain, and across more product sectors. In response to the EPA acknowledging that there is no safe level of PFOA and PFOS and issuing drinking water standards that are much stricter than on the state level, New York will be required to start addressing PFAS chemicals in a much more comprehensive manner anyway, so a statewide ban on PFAS in common products is a logical next step. Every day products should not contain chemicals that silently put public health at risk. I urge you to support these bills and ensure their passage before this legislative session ends, because we can't solve our drinking water crisis while “forever chemicals” continue to lurk in everyday products. It's time to turn off the tap to toxic PFAS chemicals. Please protect New Yorkers like me from toxic chemicals by supporting these two critical pieces of legislation.
