PFAS chemicals have been used since the 1940s in thousands of products including nonstick cookware, electronics, plastic and rubber, stain repellents, polishes, and paints and coatings. By design, they do not break down easily, and studies have shown that these “forever chemicals” accumulate in our bodies over time and increase the risk of long-term health problems, including cancer, developmental harm in children, hormone disruption, and other serious health risks. PFAS are present in ~50% of New York’s public water systems, infiltrating our drinking water and putting public health in jeopardy. An estimated 98% of people living in the US have PFAS in their bodies, according to the CDC.
New York lawmakers have only a few days remaining in the 2025 legislative session to “turn off the tap” on toxic PFAS chemicals by passing 2 critical bills to ban PFAS in everyday products. Will you send a message to Senate and Assembly Leadership urging them to support these critical bills? We can't win this fight without your help.
- S.187-A/A.7738, a Comprehensive PFAS Ban: Phases out PFAS in everyday items like non-stick cookware, dental floss, children’s products, ski wax, cleaning products, fabric treatments, rugs, paint, and household textiles by January 1, 2027.
- S.2057/A.2054, the Beauty Justice Act: Bans PFAS and a list of other known toxins, such as lead and formaldehyde, from personal care and cosmetic products.
New York has already taken steps in recent years to phase out PFAS in firefighting foam, food packaging, apparel, and carpets, but further action is needed to protect public health. Urge Senate and Assembly Leadership to protect the health of New Yorkers by keeping toxic PFAS chemicals out of our homes, our environment, drinking water, and our bodies!
