Despite Governor Hochul's rollbacks to New York's landmark Climate Law, there were still some highlights for the energy sector that came from the 2026 legislative session. Below are three bills the Atlantic Chapter supported that the legislature passed this year. Join us by urging Governor Hochul to sign them into law!
- The SUNNY Act (S.8512/A.9111-B): Legalizes plug-in solar, where small and lower cost PV solar systems can simply be plugged into existing residential electrical systems. Dramatically reduces barriers to benefitting from solar energy both for low-income New Yorkers and apartment dwellers.
- C-PACE for Resiliency Bill (S.1335-B/A.5404-B): C-PACE financing allows property owners to fund energy efficiency, renewable energy, and if the Governor signs this bill, also resiliency/water projects through annual property tax assessments. Repayment is spread over decades, avoiding large upfront costs. This bill expands the types of projects that are eligible to be financed by C-PACE to include climate resiliency upgrades like flood mitigation, wastewater management, water conservation upgrades and more.
- Healthy Homes Right to Know Act (Gas Stove Labeling Bill) (S.1280-B/A.73-B): Prohibits the sale, attempt to sell, or offering for sale to a consumer in this state of a gas stove, beginning one year after this law takes effect, unless the stove displays certain labels and warnings; authorizes the department of state to adopt regulations regarding the placement and format of such labels; provides for penalties; authorizes the attorney general to enforce such provisions.
