Phase out oil drilling in Santa Barbara County

Last spring, Santa Barbara County Supervisors voted to ask staff to begin the process of developing an ordinance to phase out oil drilling.

They heard from dozens of people and organizations, the vast majority of whom supported an oil phase-out. More than 500 postcards signed during Earth Day at Sierra Club and other booths were delivered by Community Environmental Council.

Supervisors in their votes cited the devastating costs of climate disasters, such as the wildfires and Montecito mudslide that killed twenty-three people. They also pointed to the backsliding and climate denial under the Trump Administration and the health savings of phasing out oil pollution near people’s homes and near drinking water supplies.

County Supervisors will again vote on a specific set of actions to phase out oil drilling on Oct. 21. Email them now!

Dear Supervisors, Thank you for directing Santa Barbara County staff to draft an oil and gas phaseout ordinance. Please prioritize completing the ordinance and amortization study. I join the 50+ organizations calling for this phaseout to: Fix the loophole in the County’s Climate Action Plan Limit the most climate-damaging oil production Improve air quality and health outcomes Improve the safety of our drinking water supplies Improve road safety and trucking accidents Safeguard wildlife and endangered species Prevent disasters
