Frisco: let's commit to clean energy!

Colorado mountain communities like ours are experiencing first hand the impacts of climate change, and we want to be part of the solution!  Every home lost to a wildfire, and every ski season with low snowpack and lower tourism numbers have significant impacts on communities like Frisco.

Colorado is already taking major steps to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, with nine cities committing to be powered by 100% clean electricity. Xcel Energy, the utility that serves the town of Frisco, found that solar and wind power are significantly cheaper than any other form of new electricity in the state. This year, Xcel announced in its Colorado Energy Plan, which would bring Xcel’s generation mix to 55% renewable in just the next eight years, by 2026. The transition to renewable energy is expected to save customers $442 million compared to operating business-as-usual with more polluting fossil fuels.

We can take action on climate change while saving money with clean energy. It's time for the town of Frisco to join Breckenridge and Summit County in their commitments to 100% clean electricity!

Dear Mayor Gary Wilkinson and the Frisco Town Council, In order to protect our health, safety, climate and economy from the effects of human-caused climate change, it’s critical that we transition away from fossil fuels to clean, renewable forms of energy. While Frisco has made great strides in this area, with Frisco Town Council signing onto the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement in 2006, we need to step up and do more. Citizens of Frisco are ready for the town to be a clean energy leader and make the commitment to become a 100% renewable and equitable energy city. Frisco has already established impressive sustainability goals in High County Conservation Center's Resource Wise program, but we cannot stop there. We need to join with our fellow mountain communities in Colorado, Utah, Vermont and California and set a goal of getting 100% of the whole city’s electricity from clean, renewable, and equitable energy by 2030-2035 and to do the same for all energy sectors (including transportation and heating) by 2050.
