The Dolores River is one of the nation's most stunning canyon systems. From its upper reaches in the forested peaks of the San Juan Mountains through ponderosa gorges and slickrock canyons to its confluence with the Colorado River near the Utah state-line, the Dolores River cuts an extraordinary path through western Colorado’s public lands–and it needs your help!
The Dolores River supports Indigenous communities, nurtures vibrant wildlife and unique plant species, sustains small towns, and inspires outdoor recreation opportunities. For 50 years local communities have worked to protect the public lands surrounding the Dolores River. But the river and its surrounding wildlands remain unprotected and threatened by development pressures, renewed mining interests, a warming climate, and poor natural resource management.
Designating the Dolores Canyons National Monument in Mesa and Montrose Counties would help balance the needs of protecting nature and sustaining vibrant local economies, while preserving access to these extraordinary lands for present and future generations. Join us in asking Senator Michael Bennet and Senator John Hickenlooper to call on President Joe Biden to use the Antiquities Act to conserve this special area of Colorado!
