Climate change is Connecticut’s most pressing environmental issue. To address it requires an equitable and orderly transition away from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. Other states are taking bold action, but Connecticut is lagging behind. Our state climate law requires updating and accountability. Our energy efficiency program can’t meet the high demand. We are failing to ramp up solar and heat pumps at the pace necessary.
House Bill 5004 would get us back on track! It includes transformative measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ramp up clean and renewable energy, including:
- Updating the Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA), Connecticut’s greenhouse gas reduction law, to update emissions targets.
- Aligning gas system planning with our emission targets by starting a Future of Gas docket to plan for the decreasing role of gas in a decarbonized future.
- Moving Towards Efficient Buildings by developing heat pump targets, planning pollution free space and water heating, and requiring fossil-free new and renovated state buildings.
What’s missing? Accountability to achieve these goals is lacking, so we are urging the bill to be strengthened with accountability measures.
Send a message to your legislators to support and strengthen this important climate bill!
