To date over 135 cities and 7 states have passed 100% clean energy resolutions. At the urging of its citizens, the Sarasota City Commission passed a Ready for 100 resolution in 2017, committing the city to 100% clean energy by 2045. Soon Manatee County will pass a 100% clean energy resolution as well, and it is imperative that these commitments are fully realized to ensure a safe and healthy future for all who live here.

Our petition seeks to ensure that when decisions regarding our community are being made by city and county administration, that those decisions take into account the impacts of climate change, and that they always seek to reduce, and if possible, eliminate the worst effects of climate change by: 1) Factoring in the reality of climate change and its consequential risks into all analysis, planning, policy, and decision-making relative to land use, transportation, economic development, and waste management 2) Promoting an inclusive clean energy economy with family-wage jobs and career pathways 3) Adopting a green building code that requires, for instance, all new construction to be energy and water-efficient as well as solar-ready 4) Respecting and restoring the ecological services, including carbon storage, provided by trees, natural areas, the urban forest, wetlands, and coastal habitats 5) Continuing to improve the region’s infrastructure – including zero carbon transportation, sanitation, storm water management, and electricity grid.
