Tampa is Ready for 100% Clean Energy!

The time has come for 100% clean, renewable energy in Tampa and the entire U.S. For too long, coal, oil, and fracked gas companies have jeopardized the health of our communities and put our children’s future at risk. We no longer need to rely on fossil fuels; we have cleaner and more affordable solutions right now. It’s time to put power back in the hands of our communities and leave fossil fuels behind. Tampa is #ReadyFor100.

4 years ago, St. Pete became the 1st city in the SE U.S. to commit to a 100% clean energy future for all. Since then, 172 other cities have followed St. Pete's lead. Florida cities like Sarasota, Orlando, Largo, Dunedin, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Safety Harbor, Satellite Beach, South Miami. Big cities like Atlanta, Chicago and Cleveland. Small towns with one red light. And 8 states: CA, HI, NM, NE, WA, NY, ME, NV, not to mention PR & DC. Over 1 in 4 Americans now live in one of these towns, cities or states.

But Tampa isn't one of them - yet.

Mayor Jane Castor has made it crystal clear that she wants to put Tampa on the path to its 100% clean energy future. She's hiring the City's 1st full-time sustainability and resiliency officer. She's 1 of 25 mayors working together in a new national Climate Mayors’ Steering Committee. She sent her Chief of Staff to the Netherlands to study how resilience has worked for centuries in a land below sea level. She knows Tampa is 3 years behind St. Pete in planning our own climate action, and she's working hard to catch up.

But she needs help now from Council.

It's time for Tampa City Council to pass a resolution to commit the City - both government and the entire community - to a 100% clean energy future. A goal we'll reach by learning from and working with other cities, but that we'll reach in our own way. A future where we're no longer the smoggiest city in Florida. Where we're doing our part to fight climate change. Where everyone lives and works in an energy efficient home, school and workplace, with affordable access to clean, renewable energy.

Sign the petition to Tampa City Council. Ask them to act to make Mayor Castor's vision a reality. Tell Council Tampa is #ReadyFor100.

We, the undersigned, ask Tampa City Council to to pass, and for Mayor Jane Castor to fully support, a resolution that commits the city to a goal to: • Transition the entire community to 100% clean, renewable energy, no later than 2030; • That prioritizes equity, affordability, and access for all members of the community, prioritizing low income communities, environmental justice communities and communities burdened by the fossil fuel industry. • That includes clean and renewable resources only, including carbon and pollution free energy sustainably collected from renewable sources including wind, solar, tidal, and geothermal. • Through a transparent, inclusive planning and implementation process that ensures community members and local businesses have opportunity to participate. • With near term implementation steps: At least the first year and ideally a five year plan; • To work with surrounding communities in achieving aligned clean energy and equity goal, and advocate for policies or regulations at the state, regional and/or federal level that aid the city in their transition • 173 U.S cities and 8 states have already taken such action. We ask that Council take such action as soon as possible in 2021.
