It’s Time for JEA Reduce Emissions and Transition to Clean, Renewable Energy

Since its inception the Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) has focused on delivering affordable, reliable electricity and not much else. Save for vehicle emissions, JEA has been the primary source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Duval County for decades. It has emitted more than seven million megatons of GHGs per year and accounted for more than 90% of the regional emissions. Its coal-fired Northside Generating Station alone has accounted for 60% of the JEA GHG emissions. Further, the NSGS is located in an environmentally sensitive area and is the source of highly- polluting effluents released to the waterways. It is time for JEA to reduce its emissions and improve environmental quality around the region.

Since its inception the Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) has primarily focused on delivering affordable, reliable electricity. With the acceleration of global warming JEA should also focus on reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. It is time for JEA to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels by transitioning to renewable energy sources. As a citizen-owner and customer I am asking you to accelerate JEA’s transition to clean, renewable energy sources.
