Jacksonville's Mayor, Ms. Donna Deegan, acknowledges climate change is real and needs to be addressed through carbon emissions reduction. conversely, Jacksonville's City Council members are not considering Jacksonville's contribution to global warming or the need to lesson the city's contribution. These Council members should not be allowed to deny the reality of climate change and not support carbon emissions reduction. Though Jacksonville has many sources of greenhouse gas emissions, the city owned utility is the primary sources. Save for vehicle emissions, Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) has been the primary source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Duval County for decades. JEA plants emit more than seven million megatons of GHGs per year and accounts for more than 90% of the regional emissions. It is time for Jacksonville and its municipal utility to reduce contributions to global warming and improve environmental quality around the region.
