It’s Time for Jacksonville to Reduce its Contribution to Global Warming

The City of Jacksonville (COJ) now has a Chief Resiliency Officer and is taking steps to mitigate impact of, and ease recovery from, extreme weather events. While this is much needed, it does little to address global warming the reason resilience is needed. Twelve
Florida cities and many nationwide have committed to operate on 100% clean, renewable energy by 2050. Conversely, COJ leaders are not considering Jacksonville’s contribution to global warming or the need to lessen the contribution. Though Jacksonville has many sources of greenhouse gas emissions, the city-owned utility is the primary source. Save for vehicle emissions, Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) has been the primary source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Duval County for decades. It emits more than seven million megatons of GHGs per year and accounts for more than 90% of the regional emissions. It is time for Jacksonville and its municipal utility to reduce contributions to global warming and improve environmental quality around the region.

With the acceleration of global warming, it’s time for Jacksonville to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by transitioning to renewable energy sources. As a Jacksonville resident I am asking you to identify the city’s sources of greenhouse gas emissions and take steps to reduce the emissions. Further, I am asking you to pressure JEA, our municipal utility, to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Twelve mid to large size Florida cities have committed to power all of their municipal operations, businesses, and homes with renewable energy on or before 2050. It is time for Jacksonville to join them by making a similar commitment.
