On June 19, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a plan to build a massive ICE facility in the heart of the Everglades — a project dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” — on the very site where Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the growing Everglades Restoration movement defeated the infamous Everglades Jetport in 1970.
In response, hundreds of activists from across the state rallied at the site, sending a powerful, unmistakable message: “No Alligator Alcatraz!”
Now, it’s come to light that the state appears to have overridden local authority and started construction a day earlier — despite serious environmental concerns raised by Miami‑Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the fact that the land is owned by the county.
Governor DeSantis may claim to be a champion for the Everglades, but if he allows this project to move forward, he will forever tarnish that supposed legacy — and inflict irreparable damage on the very restoration effort he has invested billions of taxpayer dollars to support.
Take action NOW to tell Governor DeSantis to stop Alligator Alcatraz, and protect Everglades restoration!
