Retire the Stanton Coal Plant!

This year, Orlando is supposed to be moving on from coal with the planned retirement of the Stanton Energy Center. But now, the coal-burning plant could remain online, and local residents could be stuck paying the price.

After already purchasing the gas-burning Osceola Generating Station as a replacement, the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) is “complying” with a federal order to keep the coal plant running to meet the massive energy demands of data centers – none of which are even located in or planned for Orlando.

Mayor Dyer worked hard to deliver clean energy and a healthier future for our city by retiring Stanton. Keeping the coal plant online would not only undo this progress, but force us to pay more for dirty, expensive energy to power data centers that drain our resources and pollute our environment.

Take action TODAY to challenge this unlawful extension order, and demand the Stanton Energy Center be retired once and for all!

After years of careful planning for a retirement to save Orlando ratepayers money on our electricity bills, the Orlando Utility Commission and City of Orlando are being forced to keep the Stanton generating facility online by the Department of Energy – at the expense of Orlando families. This is unacceptable. We have seen the DOE’s continued attempts to provide direct subsidies to the failing coal industry over the last year. To do the same in Florida, and justify the need by an onslaught of alleged data centers, is unacceptable . As rates continue to increase and electricity costs rise, the last bill anyone in Orlando should be paying is for a coal plant to serve data centers. We must challenge this illegal order, continue with plans to retire the Stanton facility, save ratepayers money, and ensure that data centers are not allowed to defer energy costs to households. Act now to protect Orlando residents and ratepayers, and usher in the affordable, clean energy future we were promised.
