SB 190, the Georgia Honor & Wellness Act, recognizes something we know deeply from experience: Nature can be healing. Access to outdoor spaces supports mental health, physical well-being, family connections, and long-term resilience. For veterans navigating post-service transitions, time outdoors can be a lifeline — not a luxury. A 2025 study found that 44% of veterans in metro Atlanta do not have access to nature within 10 minutes of their home. SB 190 waives certain Georgia State Park fees for veterans, active duty service members and their families, removing cost as a barrier to accessing outdoor spaces that may not otherwise be within reach.
Veteran access to state parks is an economic opportunity. When veterans and their families visit state parks, they do not simply enter and leave — they invest in surrounding communities through gas purchases, groceries, restaurants, outfitters, lodging, rentals, and local attractions. Ultimately, Georgia Honor & Wellness Act allows our veterans and their families to experience the true goals of our state's investment in our parks: engaging with nature, healing, and connecting to communities. Every visit strengthens public lands, supports local economies, and reinforces Georgia’s commitment to those who served.
Tell your state lawmakers to support SB 190 and make it easier for veterans, active duty service members, and their families to access our wonderful state parks!
