Tell your elected officials you’re concerned about the Cumberland Island Land Exchange!

Cumberland Island 3 horizontal.jpg

Private residents plan to develop large private homes on Cumberland Island - a uniquely undeveloped barrier island Congress designated as a National Seashore to remain in its primitive state - and the National Park Service is pursuing a land exchange that would make this possible!

However, the National Park Service (NPS) has not informed the public that they've already signed preliminary agreements to allow residents to build multiple single-family mansions within the boundary of the National Seashore. The Park Service also hasn’t disclosed other critical details of the plan, including the acreage and ecologically or culturally significant features of the public land they are proposing to give away.

Take action soon! The NPS is expected to release a new proposal this Fall, so it's critical that our lawmakers put pressure on the NPS as soon as possible so that the new proposal reflects what we, the public, want!

Tell your Members of Congress you are concerned about the Cumberland Island Land Exchange and demand transparency, accountability, and adherence to Cumberland Island National Seashore’s legislative intent!

As one of your constituents, I'm writing you today to discuss my concerns with a proposed land exchange that would seriously alter Cumberland Island National Seashore. Private residents plan to develop large private homes on Cumberland Island, a uniquely undeveloped barrier island Congress designated as a National Seashore to remain in its primitive state. And the National Park Service is facilitating this proposal by offering to exchange untold acreage of public land! However, NPS has not publicly disclosed residents’ plans to develop newly acquired land or other critical details of the plan, including the acreage, valuations, or ecologically or culturally significant features of the public land they are proposing to give away. This plan lacks transparency, accountability, and adherence to Cumberland Island National Seashore’s legislative intent! I respectfully request that your office urge NPS to stop advancing and funding the proposed land exchanges until a formal oversight review is conducted and to inform the public of the results. This issue is important to me as a Georgian who values wild places like Cumberland Island and supports the preservation of public lands. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
