Keep Hawaiʻi LNG Free

Hawaiʻi stands at a crossroads—and the decisions we make today will shape our future.

The state is considering large-scale imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet Oʻahu’s energy needs. But LNG isn’t a clean solution—it’s a dangerous fossil fuel that puts our health, environment, and future at risk, while locking us into outdated systems that our communities will end up paying for.

We call on Governor Green, Senate President Kouchi, House Speaker Nakamura, Senate Energy and Intergovernmental Affairs Wakai, and House Energy & Environmental Protection Committee Chair Lowen, to reject large-scale LNG imports and invest in local, renewable energy that truly supports our people and ʻāina.

Why we must say no to LNG:

  • LNG is a health hazard. Toxic gases from LNG facilities can cause asthma, brain damage, heart disease, and cancer—especially in communities already burdened by pollution.
  • LNG is not clean or renewable. Pollution from drilling, transporting, and burning LNG makes it as bad—or worse—for the climate than coal or oil.
  • LNG threatens our environment. Offshore terminals, pipelines, and tanker traffic can damage coral reefs, harm marine life, and disrupt subsistence fisheries.
  • LNG is unreliable and expensive. LNG depends on fragile global supply chains that break down during wars, political conflicts, or disasters, driving up electric bills.
  • LNG is a risky investment. Building LNG infrastructure could cost $2 billion or more, and like the Honolulu rail project, the final price could soar—leaving local residents to pay the price.

LNG is a bad bet for Hawaiʻi. It risks our health, wastes taxpayer money, and delays our path to 100% clean energy. Relying on imported LNG keeps us tied to foreign fossil fuels instead of building local renewable power we need now.

The state’s plan also assumes that clean fuels like green hydrogen will be cheap and widely available by 2045—but offers no real plan for how or where this hydrogen will be made. That’s too big a gamble when time is running out.
