Help ensure IDEM protects Hoosier Families

The Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter is opposing Senate Bill 277. Will you?

Senate bill 277 weakens the duty of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to protect Hoosier families by holding corporate polluters accountable. There are many substantive changes found within SB 277. Here are a few reasons you may wish to mention when asking your State Representative to “Vote No” on SB 277:

  • Provides the Governor with sole discretion to remove an Environmental Rules Board member without cause.
  • Removes the requirement for a member of the Environmental Rules Board (ERB) to be qualified.
  • SB 277 allows for septage, solid waste, or industrial waste products to be sprayed or spread onto the land surface.
    • This could very quickly turn into a significant source of solid waste runoff into our waterways.
  • Removes the option of the commissioner to prevent pollution.
  • Makes optional the duty of the commissioner to hold polluters accountable.

Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter wants to see our state agency, Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), be the group that holds those who would pollute Hoosier lands, waters, and air accountable. Please ask your legislators to OPPOSE SB 277!

Senate Bill 277 weakens the duties of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and I'm asking you to vote No. Among other provisions intended to clean up Indiana Code, SB 277 has the following substantive impacts on IDEM: -Provides the Governor with sole discretion to remove an Environmental Rules Board member without cause. -Removes the requirement for a member of the Environmental Rules Board (ERB) to be qualified. -Holds back IDEM from regulating a majority of PFAS. -Allows for solid waste, or industrial waste products to be sprayed or spread onto the land surface which could very quickly turn into a significant source of solid waste runoff into our waterways. -Removes the option of the commissioner to prevent pollution. -Makes optional the duty of the commissioner to hold polluters accountable. As a resident in your district who wants to see our Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), be the group that protects Hoosier families from pollution sources impacting Hoosier lands, waters, and air. IDEM's role, as stated in Indiana Code, is to "Fulfill the responsibilities of each generation as trustee of the environment for succeeding generations." With future generations in mind, I urge you to protect IDEM's role in safeguarding our environment and Vote No on SB 277!
