Urge Prince George's County Council to Adopt Sensible Pesticide Policies!

Butterfly on purple flower Spring 2020 Janet Gingold
Support stronger pesticide regulations for Prince George’s County. Pesticides threaten human health as well as beneficial plants and pollinators. Urge your County Council Member to support CB-8-2020.

Recent events have laid bare glaring inequities in our country.  Black and Brown communities are disproportionately affected by illness and death from the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, these communities have higher rates of exposure to toxic chemicals—exposure that increases risks of chronic conditions and complications of infections like COVID-19.

Now, more than ever, we must protect people against environmental injustice, including harmful and unnecessary exposures to pesticides.

Please support CB-8-2020 for stronger pesticide regulations in Prince George's County
In light of the health disparities we have seen in our community during the COVID19 pandemic, I urge you to implement policies to reduce disparities by eliminating environmental injustice. Increasing evidence links pesticide exposure to increased risk of diabetes, cancer, and neurologic problems including developmental disorders in children. We urge you to support CB-8-2020 to decrease unnecessary exposure to these dangerous chemicals. We need this legislation to: 1. Educate the public about less toxic alternatives for lawn care. 2. Prohibit application of pesticides other than listed and “minimum risk pesticides” to lawns and children’s play areas on both private and county-owned property, with specified exceptions. 3. Require clear notification when an area is treated with pesticides. 4. Regulate handling of pesticides by vendors to prevent accidental exposures. 5. Require integrated pest management on County property to decrease the use of pesticides and use less toxic alternatives. 6. Implement a “pesticide-free parks” program. 7. Develop protocols for park management using less toxic alternatives and minimizing pesticide use on playing fields Prince George’s County children should be able to play outside without being exposed to toxic chemicals. Please support CB-8-2020 to decrease our exposures to chemicals that contribute to health disparities.
