Tell Healey we can’t afford more gas in the state

Through a letter to Trump’s Secretary of Energy in early October, Governor Healey has made it clear that she supports the two fracked gas pipeline expansion projects proposed here in Massachusetts. These projects will cost hundreds of millions of dollars, that we, the ratepayers, will be on the hook for, and will delay our state mandated climate goals.

Back in 2022, Gov. Healey campaigned on stopping pipelines, but now she is in active support of them despite the myriad data that Massachusetts residents want clean energy and blame utility greed for their high bills, not fossil fuel supply constraints. Read more context here.

Increasing our reliance on gas will raise our energy bills and lock us in to this expensive and polluting infrastructure for decades to come (these pipelines have 60+ year lifespans). We have to tell our governor that we can’t afford more gas in Mass.

I was disappointed to see your letter to Secretary Wright, requesting faster permitting for the RARE and Project Beacon pipeline expansions and aligning yourself with the Trump administration. It’s true that our bills are going up, but increasing fracked gas in our state will only increase them more. These two pipeline expansion projects will rack up significant expenses, which we will all pay for in the supply charges of our bills. These pipelines have a lifespan of over 60+ years which does not comport with our state mandated net-zero goal for 2050. Energy efficiency and utility accountability are the ways to decrease our bills, not pumping our state full of more fossil fuels. Gas prices are extremely volatile and tied to a global market that, as we’ve seen in the past year, can skyrocket without warning. We need renewable and affordable energy, and gas is neither of these things. The climate crisis is also going to lead to increased costs, and contributing to it through promoting more fracked gas usage and allowing fossil fuel companies to profit off polluting isn’t going to help. Please listen to your constituents when we say, we can’t afford more gas in our state. Not for our wallets, our air, or our planet.
