22 MILLION POUNDS of plastics end up in the Great Lakes every year. We can significantly reduce these levels entering our waters annually by discouraging the use of single-use plastics, including plastic bags. Unfortunately, Michigan currently has a ban on banning plastic bags or adding taxes/fees thanks to a law introduced in 2016. Environmental advocates like the Sierra Club have been fighting to repeal this law ever since.
Michigan House and Senate Democrats have introduced legislation to bring local control and allow communities to implement programs to reduce litter and waste.
We need you to make a call to your State Representative and State Senator and ask them to support House Bill 4359 and the complementary Senate Bill 228. Let's get plastic out of our waters!
