Tell Michigan Lawmakers: Fossil Fuels Are Not Clean Energy

Michigan’s Clean Energy and Jobs Act set the state on a path toward affordable, reliable, and clean energy, but House Bills 4007 and 4283 threaten to undermine it. These two bills would create a special carve out for fossil fuel burning gas plants owned by two profitable corporations in the Upper Peninsula by falsely labeling them as “clean energy,” and “renewable energy”.

In a hearing before the House Energy Committee, environmental advocates and some UP citizens were blocked from testifying and combating the slew of misinformation presented to the committee, raising concerns about transparency and fairness by the Committee.

Here's the truth: This legislation is not based on a thorough analysis of the most affordable and reliable options for U.P. customers. The cheapest forms of energy in Michigan right now are solar, wind, and energy efficiency. Claims that carve-outs for polluters dependent upon volatile gas prices will lower energy costs for Yoopers are simply not true.

Join us in telling Michigan lawmakers to oppose HB 4007 and 4283, and prioritize more stable clean jobs, clean air, and affordable utilities for our U.P. residents.

I am alarmed by the attempts to undermine Michigan’s clean energy laws by corporate polluters in the Upper Peninsula. HB 4007 and HB 4283 would allow fossil gas plants without any pollution controls to be categorized as renewable energy and clean energy respectively. These bills benefit two profitable corporations while denying residents access to cheaper energy alternatives. Michigan already has a process at the Michigan Public Service Commission and within the clean energy law to ensure energy decisions are affordable and reliable, with full transparency and public input—this legislation circumvents those processes by creating an unnecessary exemption for corporate gain. If these bills pass, UMERC will not explore cheaper, cleaner energy options, forcing customers to rely on costly and polluting gas plants. Michigan’s clean energy laws are working, keeping costs low with solar, wind, and energy efficiency, which are our cheapest forms of energy. Don’t let corporate carve-outs undermine progress—vote No on HB 4007 and HB 4283.
