Tell Michigan Lawmakers: Protect Our Great Lakes From Plastics!

Michigan’s $22.8 billion tourism and outdoor recreation industry is at risk due to rising plastic pollution in the Great Lakes, our rivers, and streams. Over 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes annually, breaking down into harmful microplastics that threaten human, animal, and ecosystem health.

Microplastics have been found at alarming levels in every Great Lake. They’ve also been found in fish, drinking water, bottled water, beer, and even in the air we breathe, making their way into our bodies.

To protect human health, the environment, and vital freshwater resources, we must act now. Contact your lawmakers and urge them to take action.

Protect our Great Lakes From Microplastics
As one of your constituents, I am contacting you today to discuss the issue of plastic pollution in our community and the Great Lakes. Over 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes annually. Microplastics have been found at alarming levels in every Great Lake. They’ve also been found in fish, drinking water, bottled water, beer, and even in the air we breathe, making their way into our bodies. With Michigan supporting world-class fishing and recreation, our local waterways are an essential part of our local environment and Michigan’s $22.8 billion tourism and outdoor recreation economy. We must do our part as a state to take on this crisis. Our waterways are too vital to needlessly pollute with plastics. I urge you to take bold legislative action at the state level to address this pollution and protect the health of Michiganders and our water.
