Tell Michigan Lawmakers: Stop Turning Michigan Into a Toxic Dumping Ground

Toxic and radioactive waste from across the country is being dumped in Michigan because our laws are too weak and our fees are too low, making us the nation's dumping ground. Communities are being put at risk—without their consent.

We have a chance to change that. Senate Bills 246 and 247 would modernize Michigan’s outdated hazardous waste management system and provide stronger environmental safeguards for communities across the state.

Our children and grandchildren deserve to grow up in safe, healthy communities, not toxic sacrifice zones. Let’s make sure Michigan leads in protecting people, not polluters. Take action now and tell your lawmakers to support SB 246 and 247.

I’m writing to urge your support for SB 246 and 247—bills that would modernize Michigan’s outdated hazardous and radioactive waste laws and help stop our state from being treated as the nation’s dumping ground. As you may know, Michigan has some of the lowest landfill tipping fees in the nation—a policy that has made our state a magnet for out-of-state hazardous and radioactive waste, as well as solid waste. This is not just a fiscal issue; it’s a public health and environmental crisis. Together, these bills provide a comprehensive approach – one that closes loopholes, boosts oversight, and makes sure out-of-state waste isn’t being dumped here for next to nothing. It creates the tools to finally build a 21st-century hazardous waste management system that works for everyone. Our communities never asked to become a dumping ground, and they shouldn’t be forced to bear that burden any longer. I urge your office to support these bills in full and to oppose any attempts to weaken their provisions.
