Tiny plastic particles known as microplastics are showing up everywhere—in our Great Lakes, drinking water, food, and even our bodies. These pollutants come from everyday sources like synthetic clothing, packaging, and products that wash down the drain. Once in our waterways, they are nearly impossible to remove, threatening wildlife, public health, and Michigan’s economy.
Now, Michigan lawmakers have a chance to make our state a national leader in tackling microplastic pollution.
Here’s what this legislative package would do:
- SB 503 / HB 4766 – Ban plastic microbeads in personal care and cleaning products that wash into our waterways.
- SB 504 / HB 4768 – Establish statewide monitoring to better understand where microplastics are showing up in our drinking water.
- SB 505 / HB 4767 – Create a statewide research and action plan to identify long-term solutions to microplastic pollution.
These bills have already cleared the Senate Natural Resources and Agriculture Committee and are headed to the Senate floor. Tell your lawmakers to vote YES on this critical package and help protect Michigan’s water from microplastic pollution.
