Tell lawmakers: Protect Michigan’s water from microplastics!

Tiny plastic particles known as microplastics are showing up everywhere—in our Great Lakes, drinking water, food, and even our bodies. These pollutants come from everyday sources like synthetic clothing, packaging, and products that wash down the drain. Once in our waterways, they are nearly impossible to remove, threatening wildlife, public health, and Michigan’s economy.

Now, Michigan lawmakers have a chance to make our state a national leader in tackling microplastic pollution.

Here’s what this legislative package would do:

  • SB 503 / HB 4766 – Ban plastic microbeads in personal care and cleaning products that wash into our waterways.
  • SB 504 / HB 4768 – Establish statewide monitoring to better understand where microplastics are showing up in our drinking water.
  • SB 505 / HB 4767 – Create a statewide research and action plan to identify long-term solutions to microplastic pollution.

These bills have already cleared the Senate Natural Resources and Agriculture Committee and are headed to the Senate floor. Tell your lawmakers to vote YES on this critical package and help protect Michigan’s water from microplastic pollution.

I urge you to vote YES on SB 503–505 / HB 4766–4768 to protect Michigan’s water, wildlife, and communities from microplastic pollution. Microplastics are increasingly being found in the Great Lakes, drinking water, fish, and even our bodies. Because these tiny plastic particles come from everyday products and are difficult to remove once released, they pose growing risks to public health, wildlife, our economy, and our water resources. This bipartisan package takes practical, science-based action by reducing microplastics at the source, improving monitoring and research, and creating a long-term strategy to address this emerging threat. Please support this important legislation and help make Michigan a leader in tackling microplastic pollution.
