Tiny plastic particles called microplastics are showing up everywhere — in our Great Lakes, our drinking water, even in our food and our bodies. These tiny plastic particles come from things like synthetic clothing fibers, packaging, and products that wash down the drain. They harm fish, birds, and wildlife, and threaten our health. Once they get into our water, they’re almost impossible to remove.
Right now, Michigan lawmakers are considering a package of bills that would make our state a national leader in fighting microplastic pollution.
Here’s what these bills would do:
- SB 503/HB 4766 – Ban tiny plastic microbeads in personal care and cleaning products that wash down the drain and into our lakes.
-
- SB 504/HB 4768 – Start testing our drinking water for microplastics to understand where they’re coming from.
-
- SB 505/ HB 4767 – Create a statewide research and cleanup plan so Michigan can find long-term solutions.
These bills recently cleared the Senate Natural Resources and Agriculture Committee, clearing the way for a vote on this crucial legislation on the senate floor. Tell your lawmakers to vote yes on this legislative package and protect Michigan's water from toxic microplastic pollution!
