Michigan's nation-leading clean energy laws are under attack. In the most concerted effort we've seen since the Clean Energy & Jobs Act was passed in 2023, Michigan House Republicans are pushing a legislation package that would undermine and weaken our landmark clean energy laws.
Under the guise of "reform," House Bills 5710 and 5711 would actually raise the cost of electricity, pollute our air and water, and make power outages more common. Meanwhile, the CEJA is already working to reduce long-term costs, improve grid reliability, and protect Michigan families. Independent analysis shows the CEJA could help cut household energy bills by nearly $300 a year by 2030 and more than $700 a year by 2040.
We don't have to wait for results, either. Since 2023, we've already seen these laws:
- Protect the communities most impacted by air and water pollution.
- Streamline access to wind, solar, and battery storage, which are cheaper than new gas plants and offer long-term savings for families and businesses.
- Transition away from outdated fossil fuels like the Campbell Coal Plant, which is costing ratepayers $615,000 every day.
- Provide businesses and local governments with more predictable energy costs when planning for the future, bringing more investment and jobs to Michigan.
If House Republicans were serious about fixing Michigan's very real utility affordability problem, they would hold utility companies accountable. Instead, they’re trying to roll back our clean energy laws.
Michiganders can't afford to go backwards. Contact your lawmakers today and tell them to put Michigan families first by protecting the Clean Energy & Jobs act.
