Dear Senator and Representative, I urge you to strongly oppose Governor Walz’s proposed $32 million annual cut to the Met Council for transit. If passed, this proposal would seriously undermine the promised expansion of bus service and Bus Rapid Transit throughout the metro area. Transit funding was the centerpiece of your historic 2023 Transportation Bill. In passing the bill, the Legislature started to make up for decades of underinvestment in the need for equitable access to jobs and opportunity, especially for the many Minnesotans who are too young, too old, physically challenged, or economically distressed for whom driving a car is not an option. The Governor’s proposed cuts to LRT operations will needlessly harm our efforts to expand bus, bicycling and walking options. Please defend the Legislature’s 2023 victory and reject the Governor’s proposed roll back of the critical investments in public transit.
