Tell your Legislators to protect Minnesota's 100% carbon-free energy law!

We know that all Minnesotans need and deserve clean, affordable energy to power our homes and communities. In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature passed the 100% Law, which created a Carbon Free Standard that requires all of Minnesota’s utilities to produce carbon-free electricity by 2040.

Republicans on the MN House Energy Committee have introduced House Bill 9 that includes regressive, dangerous provisions, including:

  • Gifting undue extensions to utilities not willing to meet the 100% carbon-free law;
  • Unnecessarily lifting our state’s nuclear moratorium when Minnesota would be better served by focusing on deploying existing and less expensive sources of carbon-free electricity from wind, solar, and storage. There is no solution for high-level radioactive waste and harmful impacts on environmental justice communities;
  • Forcing cities to keep retired fossil fuel power plants that would prevent community redevelopment, and
  • Prioritizing unproven and extremely expensive industrial carbon capture and sequestration schemes over other more cost-effective technologies that produce carbon-free electricity without risk of harmful consequences.

This is not the energy future we’re fighting for. Join us to tell your State Representative and Senator to protect our carbon-free energy standard!

Dear Representative and Senator, All Minnesotans need and deserve clean, affordable energy to power our homes and communities. I urge you to reject HF9 and take all actions needed to protect the 100% Law and insist it be implemented as written and on schedule. The bill includes a number of regressive, dangerous provisions: - Gifting undue extensions to utilities not willing to meet the 100% carbon-free law; - Unnecessarily lifting our state’s nuclear moratorium when Minnesota would be better served by focusing on deploying existing and less expensive sources of carbon-free electricity from wind, solar, and storage. There is no solution for high-level radioactive waste and harmful impacts on environmental justice communities; - Forcing cities to keep retired fossil fuel power plants that would prevent community redevelopment, and - Prioritizing unproven and extremely expensive industrial carbon capture and sequestration schemes over other more cost-effective technologies that produce carbon-free electricity without risk of harmful consequences. This 2025 legislative session, I ask that you prioritize Minnesotans and our state over industry lobbyists and corporate polluters. Minnesotans deserve to live pollution-free lives, breathing clean air and drinking fresh water. We deserve clean energy that creates resiliency for our communities. And we need legislators to make decisions on behalf of our public interests, not the wealth of the very few. Protect the policies that protect Minnesotans.
