More housing options for all

Minnesotans want homes near their jobs, transit, and amenities like grocery stores and parks. Instead, homes are built on the edges of our communities, adding to long commutes and pushing into forests, wetlands, farmland, and open space. Changing the rules to allow more homes in existing communities will help us address both our growing climate and housing problems. We need to:

  • Protect open spaces by building homes closer to where people already live and work.
  • Streamline approvals to ensure investments in new homes can take root.
  • End exclusionary zoning that blocks new, affordable homes from being built.
  • Legalize more home options, such as duplexes, townhomes, and small apartments, especially near transit or downtowns.

Dear Senator and Representative, When cities block housing in already built areas, that forces new housing to the edges of our communities, increasing driving distances and destroying green space, wetlands and farmland. As your constituent, I’m writing to encourage you to support bipartisan legislation that allows for more housing options to be built across our district and the state. Minnesota has a shortage of over 100,000 homes and this problem is growing. More housing options close to transportation options and amenities like grocery stores also will benefit our communities, climate, and economy. Please work with your colleagues from across the political spectrum to pass bills that will make it possible to build more of all types of homes, including duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, condos and apartments. Just building more starter homes is not the answer. Please support: - “Missing Middle” housing options like duplexes and triplexes - Point Access Blocks (Single Stair) - Condos & Apartments along transit routes or in downtowns - Allowing commercial property to be converted to residential by right - Parking Reform - Land Value Tax options for cities I believe that our communities are better off when everyone has a stable home and people have choices in types of homes. Let's ensure that our state is doing everything possible to make this possible. Thank you,
