Take action! Urge Minneapolis leaders to support East Phillips Urban Farm

Everyone has the right to clean air and a healthy neighborhood. I’m writing to again ask your help on an urgent environmental issue affecting Minneapolis neighbors.

For decades, public officials and regulators have allowed heavy industrial pollution and traffic in the East Phillips neighborhood. Community leaders are working to improve air quality and community health, and they have a plan to renovate the former Roof Depot warehouse site into a healthy, community-owned multi-use resource. It would include an indoor Urban Farm – producing nutritious foods in what is now a food desert – space for small business, jobs training programs, low-income housing, and a large solar array. The Sierra Club North Star Chapter is a partner, working to support the community’s plan.

East Phillips Neighborhood Institute (EPNI) has already raised millions of dollars for this project which will bring needed resources and climate-resilient infrastructure to Minneapolis. However, the Minnesota legislature wrapped their 2025 special session without funding the $5.7 million needed to complete the purchase agreement with the City of Minneapolis for the site.

Your voice can make a difference! Contact Minneapolis city leaders and remind them why this project is important. We are urging the City to determine a path forward and work with EPNI to find a fair solution that will not put the project and East Phillips at risk.

The people of East Phillips and Little Earth deserve a clear path to purchase the Roof Depot building at a fair price, one that reflects the neighborhood’s history and efforts over the past decade. EPNI has the public support, partners and funding needed to begin building as soon as the City transfers ownership. It’s time for East Phillips to transform this site into something that meets neighbors’ basic needs, brings more climate-resilient infrastructure to this city, and delivers healing to land that has been polluted for decades. I want to see follow-through on commitments to Minneapolis’ Green Zones, that still carry the burden of unjust city planning from past administrations. Please support EPNI, Little Earth and East Phillips in purchasing this property, without any more unnecessary obstacles. It’s the right thing to do. Especially in this moment of environmental crisis and federal chaos, we should all do everything we can to support East Phillips contributing to a more vibrant and resilient Minneapolis.
