Did you know that portable, plug-in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems could soon be available in Minnesota?

Last year, Utah became the first state in the country to enact legislation allowing for the adoption of portable solar—small solar PV systems that are designed to be plugged into a standard wall outlet. Other states are already following suit including Colorado, Virginia, and Maryland. This helps make generating clean, renewable energy more accessible to everyone - to lower our energy bills and reduce pollution from fossil fuels.

Right now, the Minnesota Senate Energy Omnibus Policy bill includes language that would enable plug-in solar. Email your senator today and urge them to vote Yes on Plug-In Solar.

State Senator: I’m writing to ask for your support for Plug-In Solar when it comes to the Senate floor. I want more ways to reduce my energy bills, and plug-in solar is a simple, practical option. These systems can save people $20–$33 per month while making clean energy more accessible - especially for those of us who rent or don't have a viable rooftop for solar. The bill language prioritizes safety. The Chief Electrical Inspector at the Department of Labor and Industry has affirmed that the safety standards in the language - like requiring UL 3700 certification - are sufficient to address risks such as shock, overloads, and backfeeding to the grid. Importantly, there are Minnesotans already using these products today (as they can be bought online), and this bill sets clear, enforceable guardrails to ensure systems sold and installed in Minnesota are safe. Please support this language!
