Missouri voters passed the Clean Missouri initiative with 62% of the vote to make our legislature more responsive to the people. Now, the Missouri legislators have filed three new Senate resolutions (SJR 38, SJR 49 and SJR 54) and one House resolution seeking to undo the will of the voters have been filed for the 2020 legislative session.
Politicians are trying to pass gerrymandering plans that aren’t just ‘repeals’ of Amendment 1, they have new, dangerous details that set the stage for truly extreme partisan gerrymandering in Missouri. More secrecy, more partisanship, new loopholes, weaker protections for communities of color, and new rules that limit citizens' ability to sue on unfair maps. This 2020 legislative session is lobbyists' and politicians' last chance to set things up for gerrymandered maps in 2021 that would last through 2030. Politicians and lobbyists want unfair, safe districts that protect them from voters. The politicians and shadowy forces pushing these schemes want to take us back to the days of backroom deals and rigged elections that take away voters' ability to choose their leaders.Missouri voters have already spoken on gerrymandering: we outlawed it. Sierra Club members gathered over 10,000 signatures to put this on this ethical reform on the ballot. We turned out voters to pass this bill with 62% support in November 2018. We defended it last year, but will need your help to defend it again in 2020. Please ask your Representative and State Senator to respect our vote.
