KC to Evergy: Everyone Deserves Clean Air!

Evergy's Hawthorn coal plant and other polluting power plants across the metro hurt our communities, and residents are stepping up to close them for good. This is in solidarity with Missourians and Kansans advocating to get utilities to end stop polluting the air in our towns and stop raising utility bills to pay for more coal and gas. It's this simple: people want clean air, and they want their utility bills to stay affordable and be used to invest in community goals; they don't want their money spent on costly and outdated fossil fuel plants.

As a resident of the Kansas City metro area who cares about the health and well-being of my community, I call on Evergy Inc. to immediately commit to closing its Hawthorn coal-fired power plant in northeast Kansas City, Missouri, Hawthorn should be closed no later than 2025, and Evergy must commit to retiring its entire coal fleet by 2030. All people deserve to live in a safe and healthy neighborhood, with clean air to breathe, and Hawthorn is a direct threat to the lives of my friends and neighbors. Each year, the Hawthorn plant emits 2,973,081 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, contributing to the climate crisis. Over 35,000 people, including more than 10,000 children, live within just three miles from the plant, exposing them to harmful air pollutants that contribute to severe health issues. Hawthorn accounts for five premature deaths, 52 asthma attacks, and 240 lost work days annually, and a disproportionate number of residents facing these threats are people of color compared to state averages, contributing to a harmful legacy of environmental injustice and systemic racism in the KC region. My community is working to transition away from harmful fossil fuels towards an energy system that supports healthy and vibrant communities where all people can thrive. This is not possible as long as dirty coal plants like Hawthorn remain open. Please close Hawthorn by 2025 and retire all Evergy coal plants by 2030 to protect our communities. Thank you.
