Stop NorthWestern Energy's Proposed Rate Hike: No More Dirty Energy Investments

The Montana Public Service Commission is supposed to regulate NorthWestern Energy, Montana's largest utility company, in the public interest to make sure the company isn't overcharging customers and making bad investments.

Unfortunately, NorthWestern Energy recently announced a series of new fossil fuel investments. Montanans now pay the highest energy bills in the region, and NorthWestern is requesting a 20% electric rate hike for Montanans. For years, NorthWestern Energy owned just a small share of the extremely expensive Colstrip coal plant. Now the CEO wants to own the whole thing and keep it running for decades to come and force yet another electric rate increase to make Montanans foot the bill.

Send your message to urge the Public Service Commission to deny NorthWestern Energy's proposed rate increase! (Feel free to edit the message as you see fit or start from scratch!)

Please pass this message on to the Public Service Commissioners. Thank you! I'm deeply concerned about the proposed increase to my NorthWestern Energy bill. Montanans already have the fourth highest monthly energy bills in the country, and the highest energy bills in our region. Meanwhile, NorthWestern Energy's profits increased last year, from $194.1 million in 2023 to $224.1 million in 2024. Please look out for Montanans by pushing back aggressively on NorthWestern Energy's attempt to raise rates while failing to invest in more affordable options. NWE should not be financially rewarded for pursuing expensive energy sources that are not in the public interest and don't provide for the long-term health and security of our communities. I’m especially requesting that you: 1) Reject NorthWestern Energy’s request to increase Montanans’ energy bills to recoup the full cost of the investment they made in the expensive Yellowstone County Generating Station. 2) Deny NorthWestern Energy’s requests to saddle Montanans with the bill for more Colstrip repairs and upgrades. Thank you.
