Communities at the Salton Sea can’t afford worse air quality and a dying Sea. California has taken some first steps to meet its obligations at the Sea, but unless the Brown Administration makes the funding and building of restoration projects at the Sea an immediate and major state priority, there will be a human health and ecological disaster when the Salton Sea starts to dramatically recede after 2017.
There are solutions in hand which provide multiple benefits. Building habitat projects will address both air quality and protect birds. Geothermal projects will help improve air quality, provide clean energy and good jobs for our communities.
California needs to prioritize funding and building these projects now, before it's too late. Continued delay will harm the people who live in the area, costing them and costing California far more than it will cost to take action. Please direct your agency's staff to prioritize and expedite action at the Salton Sea.
