Thank you Mayor Garcetti for supporting 100% clean, renewable energy!

On Monday, 6/26, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) passed the “100% Renewable Energy in American Cities” resolution establishing support from the nation’s mayors for the goal of moving to 100% clean energy in cities nationwide.

This victory would not have been possible without the early sign-on and leadership of our Mayors For 100% Clean Energy co-chairs and clean energy champion, Mayor Eric Garcetti.

This resolution represents one of the most ambitious energy policies ever supported by USCM, and could pave the way for cities throughout the United States to commit to a just and equitable transition to 100% clean, renewable energy.

We're already seeing results -- just 24 hours after the USCM passed the resolution, Edmonds became the 37th city in the country and first in Washington to commit to 100% clean energy.

Despite an attempt by the trash incinerator industry lobby to convince U.S. mayors that burning garbage -- a polluting practice that produces more carbon than coal plants -- is both “clean and renewable,” the USCM Energy Committee and membership voted to support the resolution, as was first introduced by Mayors For 100% Clean Energy co-chairs Mayor Steve Benjamin of Columbia, South Carolina and Mayor Jackie Biskupski of Salt Lake City, Utah.

If all 1400+ cities that are members of the USCM were to transition to 100% renewable electricity, it would reduce electric sector carbon dioxide emissions by 619 million metric tons -- equivalent to the total electric sector carbon emissions of Texas, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Florida, and Ohio combined! And it could help the United States fill the gap needed to meet the Paris climate agreement.

Thank Mayor Garcetti for his leadership in joining Mayors For 100% Clean Energy and showing the USCM Energy Committee the widespread and bipartisan support for 100% clean and  renewable energy in cities and communities across the nation!
