Scott Pruitt: Oklahoma Kids Should Play, Not Pay!

Our kids have a right to play in clean lakes and rivers and to drink safe water. But when these waters are too polluted for them to play in or drink, our kids pay with their health.

Scott Pruitt is a typical politician who’s putting the health of our kids at risk because he only cares about himself and his special interest donors. As Oklahoma Attorney General, Pruitt dismantled our state's environmental protection unit and refused to prosecute corporate polluters that made our air and water unsafe. He even tried to block a rule against dumping mercury pollution in our waterways by claiming that mercury wasn’t dangerous to our health, despite scientific consensus that it is.

Now, as EPA administrator, Pruitt went against the advice of his own scientists and is allowing for the continued use of a toxic pesticide called chlorpyrifos made by a company that’s donated millions to the Trump administration. Independent studies have determined that exposure to this pesticide damages the brains of children, especially those of unborn children.

I’m incredibly concerned about the direction of the Environmental Protection Agency since you have taken over. Despite your promise to go “back to basics,” you have not done anything but and put our air and water at risk! I’m incredibly concerned about your attempts to roll back common sense protections,like the Waters of the U.S. rule, and toxic water standards for coal plants. Eliminating these protections will mean more pollution, including dangerous mercury, arsenic, and other heavy metals, in the waters we drink and play in. I’m also concerned about attempts to weaken clean air rules. We must not weaken standards for pollutants like NOx and methane, which adversely affect our air quality. Rules for regional haze that protect our national parks must also be kept in place and not weakened. I’m especially concerned about your decision to not ban chlorpyrifos. This is an incredibly toxic pesticide, especially for children and pregnant women, and we cannot continue to allow it to be used in our communities. You must also stop wasting taxpayer dollars on private jets, around the clock security, and things like an expensive, and unnecessary, privacy booth. All of this adds up to you dismantling transparency for the office of the EPA Administrator. And as a public servant, you should concern yourself with upholding the mission of the EPA, not wasting taxpayer dollars.
