Michigan's communities deserve clean air! Stop Dearborn gas plant expansion

Air quality in one of Michigan's most polluted communities could get a lot worse if Dearborn Industrial Generation (DIG) is allowed to expand their fracked gas plant, located just 700 feet from an elementary school.

This community already struggles with some of the worst air pollution in the state, and the expansion of this fracked gas plant would make air quality even worse; increasing sulfur dioxide pollution, ground level ozone and smog, not to mention climate-disrupting greenhouse gases.

Parents are fighting to get their schools and neighborhoods to have clean air. They need you to fight with them -- Submit your comments now before the January 16 deadline.

I am writing in opposition to PTI No. 163-17 and PTI No. 56-17. The proposed permits will increase the pollution of Dearborn Industrial Generation LLC (DIG). According to the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center: “...6,450 people live within a 1 mile radius of the facility. Of those people, 70% are low-income...” The ‘fracked’ gas plant that DIG wishes to build would be a substantial burden on the surrounding neighborhoods and environmental justice communities. In addition, it would be a dangerous experiment with the region’s air quality, making an already disconcerting ground-level ozone (smog) and particulate matter situation worse. The region is already in ‘nonattainment’ status for sulfur dioxide. The assumptions made from MDEQ are not substantiated. Further analysis must be completed to understand the cumulative impacts of the pollution on residents. It would be ill-advised and inadvisable to continue with this process given the lack of information and understanding of the health impacts. As a concerned citizen, I ask the MDEQ to vote with its conscience and its obligation to protect Michiganders and deny these permits.
