Defend Iowa's Energy Efficiency Programs!

Iowa utilities Alliant and MidAmerican are attacking the fastest growing sector of Iowa's economy -- clean energy.

SF2311 is moving through the state legislature and would allow utilities to pad their profits while cutting programs Iowa families rely on to save money.

These bills would allow Alliant and MidAmerican to dramatically cut common sense, cost-saving efficiency programs. Programs include home energy audits and rebates on appliances, LED light bulbs, and furnaces. This will increase the burden on thousands of families, schools, and institutions that rely on low-cost electricity, especially in rural areas. At the same time, energy efficiency and solar energy provide good jobs to Iowans.

Tell Governor Reynolds and your state legislators that our communities and families cannot afford to roll back energy efficiency programs that will result in the loss of thousands of jobs and increase energy costs across the state.

Please stop SF2311. This bill will gut money-saving programs, increase energy costs for Iowa residents and threaten thousands of good-paying Iowa jobs. The bill is a utility wish-list that pads the profits of Alliant Energy and MidAmerican while cutting programs and tools that Iowa families rely on to save money and keep their energy bills affordable. Alliant and MidAmerican want to roll back common sense, cost-saving efficiency programs. This bill will increase the burden on thousands of families, schools, and institutions that rely on low-cost electricity, and threaten thousands of energy efficiency jobs across Iowa. There were over 20,000 direct jobs in the energy efficiency sector in Iowa in 2016 that are at risk if programs are scaled back. Iowa’s energy efficiency programs saved Iowans and our businesses an estimated $95 million in 2016 alone -- and over time save an average of $2 to $3 for every $1 invested. Besides threatening energy efficiency, this bill gets rid of key processes that exist to make sure utilities are making long-term planning decisions that are in the public interest. The bill would make it difficult for key stakeholders -- like the public and the Consumer Advocate -- to provide input on utilities' biggest decisions that are paid for by Iowans. Iowa has been a national leader on clean energy, and all Iowans should benefit from the state’s leadership on clean energy -- not just monopoly utilities. This bill strips Iowa residents of our ability to control our energy bills through energy efficiency. Iowans want more choice, not less. Please stop this bill and help maintain an affordable energy future for Iowa families.
