Take action: Tell Wells Fargo to stop funding gun violence and climate destruction

Corporate interests, from the National Rifle Association (NRA) to Big Oil, continue to profit from violence and destruction at the expense of our children’s health, safety, and future -- and that’s especially true when it comes to communities of color. One of the worst offenders is Wells Fargo, which is one of the largest financiers of both the gun industry and the companies behind fossil fuel pipelines like Dakota Access and Keystone XL.

When it comes to fossil fuel finance, Wells Fargo is one of the worst actors. The bank provided a $120 million in direct project-level financing for the Dakota Access Pipeline despite the countless human rights and Indigenous Treaty violations at Standing Rock.

Wells Fargo also provides more funding for gunmakers than any other bank and has a $28 million line of credit to the NRA.

Weapons designed solely to kill have no place in our everyday lives and fossil fuels that pollute our communities and destroy our climate have no place anywhere but in the ground. Our nation’s financial leaders should be doing their part to fund safe and healthy communities where our children can feel safe -- not threatened by an unstable climate and a gun violence epidemic.

Profiting off the destruction and loss of life caused by fossil fuels and weapons of war is unacceptable. Call on Wells Fargo's CEO, Tim Sloan, to be on the right side of history and cut their ties with industries of destruction.

I'm writing to urge you to cut your ties with the fossil fuel and gun industries.

Oil and tar sands pipelines like Dakota Access, Keystone XL, and Line 3 put our climate, communities, water, and wildlife at risk while violating the rights of Indigenous peoples -- problems that are directly out of line with your public commitments to climate action and Indigenous rights. Your funding relationships with Enbridge and TransCanada are creating profits at the expense of our community’s future and that is unacceptable.

You also provide more more funding for gunmakers than any other bank, giving you the biggest opportunity to be a leader. The weapons manufactured by your clients include those used at shootings in Parkland, the Pulse in Orlando, and First Baptist Church in Texas -- some of the deadliest shootings in U.S. history. Yet, since the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, you have given two of the biggest firearm companies more than $431 million in funding. Now is your chance to do the right thing and follow the lead of Citibank in taking concrete steps to address the gun violence epidemic.

The world is watching to see whether Wells Fargo will choose to finance industries that tear communities apart and violate human rights. I urge you to stand with the millions of people who supported March for Our Lives and who marched for climate action last spring and stop funding fossil fuel companies, gun manufacturers, and the NRA. Thank you.
