Coal plants have failed to remain competitive with the abundance of cheap clean energy resources, flat demand growth, and growing energy efficiency industry -- but President Trump and Sec. Perry want to prop up this failing industry to reward their polluter friends. Perry and Trump claim that plant closures threaten national security despite showing no evidence they do.

I am deeply concerned about bailing out failing coal and nuclear power plants. This does not make sense for our environment or my pocket book. We don’t need to support dirty and expensive power plants when cheap clean energy resources and growing energy efficiency are making them obsolete. The market does not need more coal or nuclear -- it needs more low-cost, flexible resources that will protect public health. Finally, I do not want to pay more of my hard earned money to support dying industries that are on the verge of being replaced. Moreover, there has been nothing reported that would justify an expensive government intervention to prop these power plants. I urge you to stop talks of bailing out coal and nuclear power plants immediately.
