Ask Mayor Tom Henry to Call on I&M to Replace Rockport with Clean Energy

Imagine if your community had investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency -- solar panels on homes, churches and vacant and blighted properties, fewer people having to make a choice between paying for their medications or keeping the lights on, and new jobs coming from these industries.

As AEP-Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) works on its 20-year energy plan, we’re asking local city officials and organizations to join the , calling on I&M to replace Rockport power with 100% renewable energy and energy efficiency.

I&M announced at their planning meeting that its future utility plans will phase out the super-polluting Rockport coal plant by 2028. That's a start, but it's not enough. Let's make sure I&M replaces Rockport with renewable energy and energy efficiency.

AEP-Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) has stated its plans to phase out the Rockport coal-burning power plant within the next decade, and 2018 provides an opportunity for I&M customers to advocate for renewable energy and efficiency in our communities. I&M must file an updated 20-year energy plan (called an “integrated resource plan”) with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission by November 1. The plan will lay out how I&M will meet customer needs for electricity after Rockport is phased out. As an elected official, you can encourage I&M to replace Rockport power with renewable energy and energy efficiency that can create local jobs and other benefits for our communities. Last fall, students at Ball State found significant potential for building large and utility-scale solar projects on vacant properties and brownfields in Delaware County. Students calculated that just four of the 19 sites evaluated in the project have the potential to generate 16 megawatts of power. I&M currently only owns 14.7 megawatts of utility-scale solar.
