Tell the CEC: Scott Pruitt does not represent us! Demand a NAFTA replacement that puts people and the planet before corporate profits!

This week, Scott Pruitt is scheduled to speak at the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) with environmental ministers from Canada and Mexico. They plan to discuss how innovation can help protect and enhance the North American environment.

That's right, Scott Pruitt, a man who denies climate change and destroys environmental protections in exchange for political capital, will be asked his opinion protecting the environment! The absurdity continues.

The CEC is tasked with supporting cooperation among the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners to address the environmental challenges and opportunities presented by continent-wide free trade. They need to know that we do not support Scott Pruitt and we do not support NAFTA.

Like Pruitt’s destructive policies at the EPA, NAFTA has been a disaster for our communities. Trade agreements like NAFTA should protect people across borders, not cater to corporate polluters.

NAFTA has allowed for the offshoring of jobs and pollution, locked in fracking and tar sands extraction and helped clear the way for disastrous pipelines like Keystone XL.Now, closed-door negotiations could result in a NAFTA replacement that locks in Pruitt’s polluting legacy for decades after he leaves office.

It’s time to boot Pruitt and replace NAFTA with a deal that protects workers, communities, and our environment.

To: The Ministers of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) While you meet this week to discuss the current renegotiation of NAFTA and how to protect and enhance the North American environment, please know that Scott Pruitt does not represent us. Our trade agreements and environmental policies should support good jobs and a safe environment -- not corporations that shirk worker protections and pollute our air, water, and climate. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Scott Pruitt have been disasters for our communities. NAFTA rules were written over two decades ago with the input of fossil fuel executives, not workers and communities. NAFTA has allowed for the offshoring of jobs and pollution, locked in fracking and tar sands extraction, and helped clear the way for disastrous pipelines like Keystone XL Now closed-door negotiations could result in a NAFTA replacement that locks in Pruitt’s polluting legacy for decades after he leaves office. Trade agreements should protect people, not corporate polluters. They should support - not undermine - our climate commitments. It’s past time that we replace NAFTA with a new trade deal that protects workers and communities across borders. As Oklahoma Attorney General, Pruitt dismantled the office’s environmental protection unit, refused to prosecute polluting corporations and, even tried to block a rule against dumping mercury (and arsenic) in our waterways, claiming that mercury wasn’t dangerous. Now, as head of the EPA, he’s gutting the Clean Water Rule that protects drinking water for one in three Americans and claiming that regulation stops economic growth. All the while, he is wasting hundreds of thousands of our taxpayer dollars on first class flights, fancy pens, a soundproof box, and sending EPA staff to do his personal bidding like picking up laundry, going apartment hunting, and buying him his favorite hand lotion. It is unconscionable that Pruitt, who has brought devastation to so many communities, should be allowed to represent our nation in talks about NAFTA at the CEC. It is irresponsible to give Scott Pruitt the ability to influence North American environmental policy when he has built his career on destroying our environmental protections in exchange for political capital and campaign donations. Scott Pruitt never looked out for Oklahoma’s best interests and he is now continuing that trend on a national scale. He’s constantly put the health of our children and families at risk because he only cares about himself and his special interest donors. As the CEC discusses, NAFTA and environmental stewardship, please know, Scott Pruitt does not represent the majority of Americans who support climate action. I strongly urge you to push for a NAFTA replacement that supports our communities -- not corporate polluters.
