In Nebraska we have the great fortune of living in a Public Power District, and that means we have say in how our utility serves us. Right now, you have the opportunity to tell OPPD what you want that public power to look like.

OPPD is on track to achieving 50% clean energy, but we can't stop halfway. We know that clean energy provides thousands of good jobs in Nebraska and helps make our power more reliable and sustainable.

I am writing to urge you to set a goal for OPPD to reach 100% of retail electricity sales from clean energy such as wind and solar by 2025. OPPD’s efforts to update their Strategic Directives provides a major opportunity to be bold in moving Omaha and OPPD towards clean energy and away from coal-fired power. OPPD has made great strides over the last two years, setting a goal in 2015 to reach 30 percent clean energy and reaching that goal this year. Cleaner, cheaper, healthier energy is here. It’s time for Omaha’s energy leaders to join leaders across the U.S. in making a commitment to 100% clean and renewable energy. Moving to clean energy saves customers money and protects our air and water by reducing the need for power from polluting power plants that use coal and other dirty fossil fuels. OPPD directors can learn from the commitment to 100% clean energy that other communities across the country are making, and demonstrate real leadership for the entire state of Nebraska at the same time. OPPD can lead Nebraska into a new energy future focused on creating jobs, new economic opportunities and cleaner air and water. Thank you for hearing the voices of OPPD customers and owners, on 100% clean energy and on the many issues that are covered by your new strategic directives.
