The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission made the wrong decision when they approved the Line 3 pipeline, siding with a foreign pipeline company -- allowing them to run more dirty tar sands through some of our most precious natural and cultural resources. Yet Governor Mark Dayton has an opportunity to fix it. On August 29, 2018, the Sierra Club and North Star chapter joined Indigenous leaders, environmental advocates, and faith leaders in Bemidji -- a city along the pipeline route -- to send a strong message to Gov. Dayton: Act immediately to stop Line 3 and protect land, clean water, Tribal sovereignty, and our climate.Take action: Tell Gov. Dayton that communities across the country are watching whether he will act to stop this dangerous and dirty Line 3 tar sands pipeline.Enbridge’s track record and history of spills makes it clear that this pipeline poses an unacceptable threat of permanent damage to the Mississippi River headwaters region and the pristine lake country of northern Minnesota. The route also directly threatens Ojibwe wild rice treaty rights and sensitive ricing waters.Minnesotans shouldn’t have to bear these risks for the benefit of foreign tar sands companies. It’s time for Governor Dayton to decide what kind of legacy he wants to leave: one of favoring toxic industry and putting at risk the communities he’s supposed to protect, or one of doing the right thing for Minnesota’s waters, communities, and future.Join us in telling Gov. Dayton to act immediately to halt the permits and any pre-construction until legal appeals have been heard, courts have weighed in, and the tribal cultural properties survey has been completed. Our clean water and our communities are on the line, and we won’t stop fighting to protect them.
