Trump continues to rush toxic NAFTA deal without Canada. Instead, he announced a U.S.-Mexico trade deal that ignores the climate crisis.
NAFTA must be replaced. NAFTA empowered corporate polluters to challenge environmental protections, boosted destructive mining and displaced millions of farmers in Mexico, and contributed to the rise of Canada's toxic tar sands industry.
But replacing NAFTA with a rushed deal that ignores the climate crisis isn't acceptable. After concluding an agreement with Mexico with little time to spare, Trump now intends to strong-arm Congress and rush the deal through before the new Mexican president takes office on December 1. As negotiations with Canada to join the agreement continue, we must demand changes including strong climate protections.
If approved, any new trade deal could stand for decades, leading to more oil and gas pipelines, more fracking, and more climate pollution. Members of Congress must push back against Trump's pro-polluter trade agenda and demand strong protections for our environment.
Don't let Trump's trade agenda get in the way of climate action! Tell your members of Congress to reject any deal that doesn't include strong climate protections.
